Wii DVD compatibility list

This page contains a list with tested DVD media brands, mediacodes, speeds and burn applications on the Nintendo Wii. Please feel free to add your own experiences with a DVD. However, please refrain from posting what you burned on the DVD to test it ;).


I've personally also done a lot of tests a while back and put it all into a research paper (PDF). I've inserted discs over 560 times just for those tests and used three different modchips with 5 different firmwares in total so the results are pretty good ;). To allow for easy reading I felt it best if each DVD (/mediacode) would get its own table. In that table one can add personal experience with the device (however general information stays the same). That will allow for a larger amount of tests (more then 1 result per DVD/mediacode).

The list is ordered by alphabet, preferred is to use the mediacode as selector in this list over the name or brand; When adding to the list please use the media code to select the proper location. The list entries are made up as such:

[mediacode (+ media type)];[brand + type]
[collum headers]
[experiences]

To add to the list use the example as your base. To add a test line, go to the last entry in the table reading |} . Before that code add one similar to this one;

Of course replacing the contents of that line with your own findings (putting your mod-chip in the Settings/notes section).

[edit] Getting the mediacode

Getting the mediacode from the DVD you are using can be done in many ways. I'll explain one (in short) here:

  • First download and install DVDidentifier on a computer with a DVD drive.
  • Put the DVD that you will be testing in the computer.
  • Start DVDidentifier.
  • Select the proper drive in the pull down menu.
  • Press the big IDENTIFY button.
  • Read the media's manufacturer ID (and if applies the media's media type ID).
